Recently, a research team from the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland published an article titled "Tempeh, a fertilized soybean, extends life span via MAPK pathway and improvements in healthy aging in Caenorhabditis elegans" in the journal Current Research in Food Science. This study found that extract from Tianbei can extend the lifespan of nematodes by up to 45% and significantly reduce intracellular reactive oxygen species levels.
Tianbei is a traditional soy product made from soybeans through solid-state fermentation by Rhizopus spp. It has a protein content of 20% and is rich in dietary fiber, isoflavones, and antioxidants. The research team systematically compared the effects of soybean extract and Tianbei extract on nematode lifespan and found that both had longevity extending effects in the concentration range of 50-200 μ g/ml, with the 100 μ g/ml concentration group showing the best effect. It is noteworthy that the average lifespan of nematodes in the Tianbei treatment group was extended by 32-45%, significantly better than the 29-38% in the soybean extract treatment group. Meanwhile, chemical composition analysis showed that Tianbei retained the main isoflavones (such as genistein and daidzein), saponins, and phenolic acids in soybeans, among which chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and other components are known to regulate oxidative stress through the MAPK pathway. In vitro experiments have shown that these compounds can effectively activate MAPK signaling in both PC-12 cells and mouse models, which is consistent with the molecular mechanism of nematode longevity effect observed in this study.
